[tex-live] Why does texhash write expected output to STDERR?

The following behavior caught me by surprise:

# texhash > /dev/null
texhash: Updating /usr/local/texlive/2013/texmf-config/ls-R...
texhash: Updating /usr/local/texlive/2013/texmf-dist/ls-R...
texhash: Updating /usr/local/texlive/2013/../texmf-local/ls-R...
texhash: Updating /usr/local/texlive/2013/texmf-var/ls-R...
texhash: Done.

Is there a reason for writing this output to STDERR?
