FWIW, I think the kernel is irrelevant here, as the 32-bit kernel can
still run x86_64 code (and vice versa).  However, you can still install
10.6 on 32-bit hardware, and 64-bit code definitely won't run on that.
I expect that problem to go away in another five years or so when TL
drops 10.6 support :).
