When trying to upgrade my 2013 TeXLive installation via tlmgr, I got the following error message:
running updmap-sys ...
updmap-sys failed (status 1), output:
updmap: resetting $HOME value (was /Volumes/Data/Users/artemio) to root's actual home (/var/root).
updmap is using the following updmap.cfg files (in precedence order):

ERROR: The following map file(s) couldn't be found:

Did you run mktexlsr?
You can disable non-existent map entries using the option
--syncwithtrees.
As suggested by this message, I executed the command
sudo updmap-sys --syncwithtrees
and got the following output:
updmap: resetting $HOME value (was /Volumes/Data/Users/artemio) to root's actual home (/var/root).
updmap is using the following updmap.cfg files (in precedence order):
/usr/local/texlive/2013/texmf-dist/web2c/updmap.cfg

pigpen.map (in /usr/local/texlive/2013/texmf-dist/web2c/updmap.cfg)

Do you really want to continue (y/N)? y
answer =y=
Creating new config file /usr/local/texlive/2013/texmf-config/web2c/updmap.cfg
Use of uninitialized value in subroutine entry at /usr/local/texlive/current/bin/x86_64-darwin/updmap line 1429, <STDIN> line 1.
Can't use string ("") as a subroutine ref while "strict refs" in use at /usr/local/texlive/current/bin/x86_64-darwin/updmap line 1429, <STDIN> line 1.
Is this a bug in updmap-sys?
