[tex-live] testsuite: to include or not to include? doc or src?

It might be interesting to have it as a part of at leat the src.

At least having some tests to look at for inspiration, may help others to make suitable tests for their own packages.

Subject: [tex-live] testsuite: to include or not to include? doc or src?

Hello,

A while back we had a discussion with Karl about what to do with
testsuites in one particular TeX package.

Marco is currently helping me prepare an extensive testsuite for one
of my modules, so the same question rises again. The question probably
depends a lot on the size and nature of the testsuite, but still.

My question is: to what extent does a testsuite belong to CTAN & TeX
Live? It contains some tests that could serve as usage examples (but
probably too many and it might be too difficult to find something
particular - it's usually better to have better documentation than 50
tests). And in case that they are included: should they be included in
"src" or "doc"?

I might be wrong, but I believe that most packages in TL don't contain
testsuites (it's also very likely that most don't have any). Also, if
the testsuite becomes large (there might be some stress tests), it
might also be inconvenient to include the whole suite for users who
just want to use the package.

What do others think?

Mojca
