[tex-live] kpsewhich and format files

How can I get kpsewhich in a TeXLive 2012 to show me the path of a
format file, e.g. pdflatex.fmt? Is it even possible?

My TeXLive 2012 is working fine, the format files are there, the
engines find them, I can output the search pathes but I'm simply
unable to get the exact path of a specific format through kpsewhich.
Everything I tried -- starting from "kpsewhich pdflatex.fmt" --
outputs nothing. 

(It doesn't work with miktex either).
