More precisely, someone *in*accurately claimed such, presumably based on
limited and/or outdated knowledge.

Poppler has support for multimedia annots.

Okular (kde's viewer, which uses poppler for pdf support) does as well.

Evince (gnome's viewer) doesn't seem to have support yet, but I belive
I've seen patches proposed to add it.

Poppler's demo apps also should support them.

(Funny side note:  the below email is from a debian user complaining
                   that the movie he embedded in a pdf played OK in
                   okular but is unsupported in acroread....)
