[tex-live] Install problem . . .

I'm on Ubuntu 11.10-64bit and I started the ./install-tl script as sudo,
(with the links enabled). But somewhere early on it stops with this error:

tar: rmtlseek not stopped at a record boundary

untar: untarring /usr/local/texlive/2011/temp/cm-super.tar failed (in
/usr/local/texlive/2011/texmf-dist)
untarring /usr/local/texlive/2011/temp/cm-super.tar failed, stopping
install.
Installation failed.
Rerunning the installer will try to restart the installation.
Or you can restart by running the installer with:
  install-tl --profile installation.profile [EXTRA-ARGS]
Writing install-tl.log in current working directory.

Any ideas what is going wrong?
