Akira (or somebody else from the Japanese community) already told us
about the difference. Because of this difference we were highly
discouraged to do any weird trickery with patterns. We were told that
pTeX format can be generated with different encodings, so it was not
safe to do any assumptions about encoding at all.

The file in question uses some very weird bytes of characters
(TextMate has serious problems with that) and I suspect that could be
the reason.
