There are some systems where problems seem to exist when CLISP 2.49
is used as run-time engine. CLISP 2.48 works fine in these
situations. I haven't been able to reproduce any of those crashes
as I have no access to any of the architectures / operating systems
where this happens. I assume some optimization was introduced in
2.49 that does not work on all systems.

FWIW, on MacOS X, the problem with crashes was resolved by going
back to CLISP 2.48 from TeX Live 2010.
