Karl has already replied to that. Personally, I always install with administrative privileges (sudo), so I don't know how to do it any other way.
What I meant was that everything works as soon as installation is complete (but see about path below).
Also, you say you installed TeXLive on Ubuntu running in a virtual machine running under Windows. You can install TeXLive under Windows as well ---though I don't work on Windows (I have it as a safety net), I made the installation without any problem whatsoever.
Now about path ---when installing under Ubuntu, you're given the option to make symlinks (in /usr/bin, I think) of the binaries ---I don't follow that route, but I think you don't have to worry about path if you do so.
You can also set the path to the binaries directory in ~.bashrc, for example; and if you don't install with administrative privileges, maybe that's the best way. I don't follow that route either.
What I do ---but might be *not* the best way--- is put the path
usr/local/texlive/2010/bin/x86_64-linux
in /etc/environment.
Finally, as Norbert said, you can also install TeXLive 2009 with Synaptic.
