I don't think that's the case.  For example,

Fontname: URWPalladioL-Roma
Family Name: URW Palladio L
Name for Humans: URW Palladio L Roman
 
That's the font I modified to produce plrj.pfb.

That may be. I guess I should have used Palladio. That will presumably
fix the fontconfig issue as well.
