On OS X:

! LaTeX Error: File `t√$\relax {\begingroup 1\endgroup \over 4}$te.tex' not fou
nd.

Type X to quit or <RETURN> to proceed,
or enter new name. (Default extension: tex)

(Whether tüte.tex exists or not)

Strangely, if I enter the filename in the console it changes again:

Enter file name: tüte

! LaTeX Error: File `tòte.tex' not found.

Type X to quit or <RETURN> to proceed,
or enter new name. (Default extension: tex)

Enter file name:
Process aborted
