Has there been a recent change in the recorder behavior? I've noticed that pdfTeX started writing to the current directory instead of the output directory.
All output files should be written to the output directory; it may be the case that the current directory isn't writable!
Currently, the filename used is the name of the file read first; that is the input file given on the command line, or a rather arbitrary file if the input comes from the terminal (e.g., the document class name in the case of LaTeX). I think the recorder should really follow the long-established conventions and use the output directory and the job name for its output file. Ideally, the recorder file name is just the log file name with extension changed.
