You're mentioning add-ons, hence another thing comes to my mind.
TeXworks supports templates.  There is a menu entry

  File => New from template...

I think that this is an invaluable feature for LaTeX teachers.

BTW, I'm wondering why everybody thinks that the default engine should
be pdflatex.  Is there any good reason why newcomers should be
bothered with antique 8-bit font encodings?
