But we still have in TL:
    config.amz and psfonts.amz
    config.cm but no psfonts.cm
    config.cmz but no psfonts.cmz

So the questions is: do we still need all such config.* and
    psfonts.* files?

As far as I know, the answer is no. Getting others' input about it was
the point of my message.

I removed psfonts.{cm,cmz} in r2201:

these old files were used by bluesky years ago, not relevant any more
(te, 17sep06 mactex mail)

Changed paths:
   D /trunk/Master/texmf-dist/fonts/map/dvips/cm/psfonts.cm
   D /trunk/Master/texmf-dist/fonts/map/dvips/cm/psfonts.cmz

I believe the other four files remain simply because I never thought to
delete them, never having looked into it until the AMS asked me what was
going on.

As for me, we can drop all that mess and distribute only .map files
    on CTAN and in TL.

Glad to hear it.
