[tex-live] reliability of ~/texmf in TeXLive and other distros?

Did you do
	kpsewhich -expand-var='$TEXMFHOME'
mind the $!!! WIthout it you will not get anything not even on TL2009 ;-)
That was the reason -var-value was introduced to get rid of the need
to specify the $ which can be a problem on some systems, or at least
makes everything more complicated.

Yes, that is definitely a good idea.
	kpsewhich sagetex.sty

Or simply give only an info in the README file that if it is not shipped
or too old a version ....
