Hi Oliver,

    any useful idea how to get out of the dilemma except for deleting the 
    Greek line from the MonTeX map file. Do you think this is feasible? 

Not only feasible, but absolutely necessary.  It is simply wrong for a
package's map file to refer to fonts that the package does not provide.

    It is a good idea to include Greek into the dependency test 

I also added a dependency from montex to cbfonts on the TeX Live side.
So any TL user who installs montex will also (by default) get cbfonts.
