I think the problem is that in TL 2008 ark10.mf was misplaced in the  
doc section (also dingbat.mf):

/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf-dist/doc/fonts/dingbat/ark10.mf

In TL 2007, it is in fonts:

/usr/local/texlive/2007/texmf-dist/fonts/source/public/dingbat/ark10.mf


While this is fixed, you can make a copy of ark10.mf and dingbat.mf to  
your working directory ---TeX will find them there.
