[tex-live] install-info

I have installed tex-live 2008 from the dvd-image and it is working
perfectly. However, the included install-info which is located-linked
in /usr/local/bin overrides the existing install-info. the first package
whose installation/update was rendered defect was auctex. 

I moved the /usr/local/bin/install-info to _install-info and everything
is o.k.

Is this program really necessary on a linux system?
