[tex-live] Files in TEXMFHOME are ignored

Hello,

after installing texlive 2008 (OpenSuse 11) I put those lines in the .profile

# texlive 2008

PATH=/usr/local/texlive/2008/bin/i386-linux:$PATH; export PATH
MANPATH=/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf/doc/man:$MANPATH; export MANPATH
INFOPATH=/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf/doc/info:$INFOPATH; export INFOPATH

Everthing seems to work fine, except that  all files in /home/AW/texmf are ignored. There are beta-KOMA-script files and -- important -- many local fonts. updmap-sys can't find my Map files, and even after putting a local file "home.cfg" in the home TDS this command

tlmgr generate updmap --localcfg /home/AW/texmf/home.cfg

neither works as User AW ("Cannot open /usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf-var/web2c/updmap.cfg for writing: Keine Berechtigung at /usr/local/texlive/2008/tlpkg/TeXLive/TLUtils.pm line 1271, <FOO> line 5.") nor as root (no output).

In the texmf.cnf I changed line 114 to:

TEXMF = {!!$TEXMFHOME,$TEXMFCONFIG,$TEXMFVAR,!!$TEXMFSYSCONFIG,!!$TEXMFSYSVAR,!!$TEXMFMAIN,!!$TEXMFLOCAL,!!$TEXMFDIST}

and 135 to

TEXMFDBS = {!!$TEXMFHOME,!!$TEXMFSYSCONFIG,!!$TEXMFSYSVAR,!!$TEXMFMAIN,!!$TEXMFLOCAL,!!$TEXMFDIST,!!$TEXMFDOC}

I beg your pardon in case it's a stupid question, but how can I use my local fonts?
