[tex-live] newbie configuration problems

Hi. I've compiled TeX Live from source (using the 2007 version, since
AFAIK there's no tarball for 2008 yet). I think I've done the
installation correctly, but I seem to be missing some important bits
of configuration. The configuration I've done so far includes
creating mktex.cnf (containing only ": ${MT_FEATURES=appendonlydir varfonts}")
and running "texconfig-sys init mf", "fmtutil-sys --missing", and
"texconfig-sys rehash". This simple test fails:

$ dvips -f < texk/web2c/tests/story.dvi > /dev/null
This is dvips(k) 5.96 Copyright 2005 Radical Eye Software (www.radicaleye.com)
' TeX output 1992.05.17:0844' ->
kpathsea: Running mktexpk --mfmode / --bdpi 600 --mag 1+0/600 --dpi 600 cmbx10
gsftopk: fatal: map file `psfonts.map' not found.
mktexpk: don't know how to create bitmap font for cmbx10.
dvips: Font cmbx10 not found, characters will be left blank.
dvips: Can't open font metric file cmbx10.tfm
dvips: I will use cmr10.tfm instead, so expect bad output.
dvips: ! I can't find cmr10.tfm; please reinstall me with proper paths

I also run into a problem when installing Lilypond, which is my main
reason for installing TeX. That build ends with:

MFINPUTS=. mf -progname=mf "\mode:=laserjet; nonstopmode; input feta11.mf;"
This is METAFONT, Version 2.71828 (Web2C 7.5.6)
kpathsea: Running mktexfmt mf.base
I can't find the base file `mf.base'!

Can anyone help figure out what I'm missing? It looks like maybe
fonts aren't included in TeX Live's source.tar.bz2, and I have to
install those separately, but I haven't found any documentation on
that.
