Yes, you can't have "$wherever/bin/platex" both being a symlink to ptex and
pdftex, and TEXMFVAR/web2c/platex.fmt being both a polish and a japanese
dump... 

In other words, you can't have both installed on the same system, which
is bad in particular for multi-user systems.
