No problems here with AR7/Linux, xpdf 3.00, ghostscript 8.54.

In both cases Multivalent is used to store the PDF file, in the
former case as PDF-1.4, in the latter case as PDF-1.5.

Perhaps "Preview" has problems with PDF-1.5?
