Yeah, but the point of this idea is to not force users to set the extra
environment variable to get access to their system fonts. 

I guess there is no harm in setting OSFONTDIR in the cnf file.  If it's
in the environment, the environment value will override.  If not, it
can't hurt to have it defined via the cnf file.

    dislike the idea of having WINFONTS LINUXFONTS ANYPLATFORMFONTS and
    thereby platform dependent cnf files

I do too, but it is a fact that TL has a separate texmf.cnf for Windows.
