$ ldd /usr/local/share/Acrobat7.08/Reader/intellinux/bin/acroread|grep fontconfig
  libfontconfig.so.1 => /emul/linux/x86/usr/lib/libfontconfig.so.1 (0xf77db000)

If you don't have fontconfig installed you can use strace to find out
whether it looks for fontconfig.  If fontconfig is absent it scans the
X11 font directories.  Older versions than AR7 will certainly not use
fontconfig.
