Very much so. its a famous bit of research by Frank Liang,
encapsulated in the program "patgen" by Knuth. The details
are in the source of patgen

I suspect the former, in the rare cases that these things
are enhanced. One may adjust patterns by hand anyway.
I would regard the pattern list as a work in its own right,
and its own source.
