indeed! i remember the times that 4tex (before tex live) happily 
replaces ones ghostscript with an older version; i think one of the 
problems (may be gone now) was that tex distros could only ship ancient 
gs's; i'm not sure how many other goodies suffer from this; one of the 
problematic progs is imagemagick because it's name 'convert' conflicts 
with installed other progs; actually, i sometimes wonder to what extend 
installed binaries have conflicting names (iin the past i saw readline, 
access and similar names come by which sounds pretty generic to me but 
nevertheless were tex related)
