Good news. Stephan Ulrich wrote the following to the bug I reported:

  Oops, sorry, my comment was a bit premature ... turns out that it *is*
  possible to force input focus for the text field also in Xaw; patch is
  attached. Committed to 22.84.11-RC9 (STABLE) and 22.84.13-CVS11
  (HEAD).

So, as far as I am concerned, there is no need for an alternative
compiled with lesstiff anymore.
