[tex-live] kpathsea and gsftopk problem

After years of using my (outdated) installation of fpTeX I, finally switched
to TeXLive. As fpTeX was very close to teTeX/TeXLive, I don't have many
problems. Of course, there's always something that breaks.

The weirdest problem I've stumbled upon occurs whenever kpathsea tries to
find a PK file for a Type 1 font that does not yet exist. It runs mktexpk,
which in turn runs metafont first, followed by gsftopk. The entire mktexpk
run succeeds, so the PK file needed is generated, added to the correct
directory, and the corresponding ls-R is updated. However, kpathsea still
thinks it has failed. This problem only occurs with Type 1 fonts, not for
metafont files.

For example,

  gsftopk ptmr8r 600
  returns exit code 0

mktexpk --mfmode ljfour --bdpi 600 --mag 1+0/600 --dpi 600 ptmr8r
  returns exit code 0

  kpsewhich -mktex=pk -dpi=600 ptmr8r.pk
  returns exit code 1

(Before every run ptmr8r.600pk was deleted of course.)

The output of the last command is:

kpathsea: Running mktexpk --mfmode / --bdpi 600 --mag 1+0/600 --dpi 600
ptmr8r
mktexmf: empty or non-existent rootfile!
mktexpk: Running gsftopk ptmr8r 600
gsftopk(k) version 1.19.2/853

kpathsea: Appending font creation commands to missfont.log.

As a result, windvi won't show any new fonts, unless I close windvi and
reopen the same dvi-file. Very frustrating!

Can anyone else reproduce this problem?

Thanks in advance,
Ruben Prins
