I find a check before calls to "clear", but the "fatal error message
box" has no such protection. Anyway, if such a "fatal error" happens,
you have a more serious problem anyway...

pdftex no longer reads pdftex.cfg. If you run with the old .ini files,
you miss some defaults which should be dumped into the format. That's
where the new .ini files and pdftexconfig.tex come in.

And, we have the rearranged layout concerning map / enc files and the
drivers now use kpse_fontmap_format instead of kpse_dvips_config_format
for accessing map files.

All in all, I don't recommend this mixture of new binaries and old-style
tree.
