A new version of unzip et al.  Very interesting.

I download the original unzip 5.51 source from 
  http://sunsite.cnlab-switch.ch/ftp/mirror/infozip/src/
and compiled it on a machine running Red Hat workstation 2.1, using
gcc 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.2 2.96-128.7.2) for Unix (Linux ELF) on Nov 21 2004.

The resulting unzip binary was able to unpack bin-amstex.i386-linux.zip
without an error:

$ unzip -v $einst/archive/*amstex*i386-linux*
Archive:  /home/ftp/texlive/Contents/testinst/archive/
  inflating: bin/i386-linux/altpdfamstex  
    linking: bin/i386-linux/amstex   -> pdfetex 
  inflating: texmf/lists/bin-amstex.i386-linux  
finishing deferred symbolic links:
  bin/i386-linux/amstex  -> pdfetex

This seems to indicate that the bug is in some change that RH has made
to the original source, or (less likely) a compiler bug.

Could you try compiling the original source on FC3 and see if that
works?  And if it does, report the bug to RH?
