btw, the danger of undefines is that they are lost while a state switch 
keeps them accessible, so, in case of undefines, we need:

   \let\normalpdfoutput=\pdfoutput \let\pdfoutput=\undefined

   etc

so that one can always say:

   \let\pdfoutput=\normalpdfoutput

(i have lots of those \normal... in context -)
