here i have been using the following policy:
- texmf => the official stuff, i.e. the latest official tex live
- texmf-local => updates
- texmf-project => project related files
- texmf-fonts => commercial fonts and generated metrics
- texmf-mswin/macosx/linux => binaries and formats (so that trees can be shared, i.e. a linux server can serve windows clients)
- texmf-var => not used since it may end up in strange places (temp user paths and such, in which case things go unnoticed)
(so, i have to adopt config files anyway)
