I think that AFM files which are contained in the cm-super can be safely
removed from the TeX Live which will save about 9Mb. They aren't needed
for TeX&friends and were added only to make the fonts usable with non-TeX
related applications.

Another option, of course, is to remove cm-super as a whole package. :-)
