so we should look into what is really used of the fonts (e.g. cmsuper/gb afm files are not used at all i think sincethe encodings are frozen and no afm2tfm is used there; afm files of generic type1 -like the urw fonts- are used) 

and, are all those design sizes really needed? if lm is set up right, plr, csr, aer can go as well 

how about all those mf files? and files under source?
