The problem wasn't TeXLive or CTAN related.
Because the final DVD iso-image is around 6 GB I had to split the first draft
iso image into 4 files. I spread those files over 2 DVDs.
The problem was that the HD Volker used for copying the iso image parts onto
was an external HD connected with USB2. His Win XP (service pack free) didn't
support USB2... It had a FAT32 which had to be upgraded to NTFS because FAT32
can only hold files up to 4GB. 3 hours later after having enjoyed Win XP blue
screens and crashes we gave up. I took his HD home using my PC. I have a
Windows 2K for testing purposes (yes, it is paid) , also service pack free.
The copy action took now almost 2 hours. In the meanwhile I discovered that
for Win2k or Win XP to support USB2.0 service packs are required. Having
finished the copy of the iso image to the external HD I installed service
pack 4 for Win2K and a new copy of the iso image took only around 12 minutes
or so.
Hope this detailed explanation helps to relax :-)
BTW: The DVD iso image itself is in a good shape. Installation of TeXLive was
fine and teh CTAN tree looks good as well.
