[tex-live] updmap question

OK, it is like this. I am pretty sure that in a previous version my
texmf-var/web2c/updmap.cnf file was overwritten. But anyway, now it's
working, thanks... BUT:

Which is the order the updmap.cnf is searched for: Only in texmf-var or
also in other pathes. Is it searched in a path set in texmf.cnf or is
the path hard wired to updmap?
