[tex-live] updmap question

Hi friends!
How is updmap supposed to be configured?
I have
/usr/TeX/texmf my local texmf path, WITH my texmf.cnf
/usr/TeX/texmf-var variable data, mostly pool from
source.development and fmt/log files from
texconfig init
/src/p4-base/Master/texmf you know this
in the texmf.cnf = /usr/TeX/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf I set
TEXMFMAIN = /src/p4-base/Master/texmf
TEXMFLOCAL = $SELFAUTOPARENT/texmf
VARTEXMF = $SELFAUTOPARENT/texmf-var
...
Now I want to have my adapted updmap.cfg: I put it into
/usr/TeX/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg
but it is not used. Putting it into
/usr/TeX/texmf-var/web2c/updmap.cfg
erases it when calling updmap. bash -x shows me:
...
+ rm -f /usr/TeX/texmf-var/web2c/updmap.cfg
+ cp /src/p4-base/Master/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg /usr/TeX/texmf-var/web2c/updmap.cfg
...
Is this supposed to be done like this?
I thought updmap.cfg could be tailored to my needs. Or is it a problem
with my TEXMF{MAIN,LOCAL} setting?
BTW: I am using the above setup in several places, but unfortunately it
seems to generate some problems, although it looks to me not like
complete nonsense - any comments?
Best wishes
Norbert

Arthur's consciousness approached his body as from a great
distance, and reluctantly. It had had some bad times in
there. Slowly, nervously, it entered and settled down into
its accustomed position.
Arthur sat up.
`Where am I?' he said.
`Lord's Cricket Ground,' said Ford.
`Fine,' said Arthur, and his consciousness stepped out
again for a quick breather. His body flopped back on the
grass.
