    I think that some ancient
    unix systems even *require* that whitespace.

Unless you have actual experience to the contrary, I think this is an
urban myth, propagated/perpetrated by Greg Woods in the 1980's.

The only real-life system I remember being mentioned about this was
Sequent DYNIX, and (a) I sincerely doubt any Sequent is still powered
on, and (b) the Sequent system I had access once upon a time actually
understood `#! /bin/sh' just fine.
