How expensive/hard would it be to get file input to silently uncompress
files so that \input foo.tex would input foo.tex.bz (if it was there, or
if some flag in texmf.cnf specified that part of the search tree was
compressed, or something)
Then you could compress the files but still keep the thing "Live".
