At the risk of beeing even more heretic - let me remind you my own
favourite candidate: two (2) CDs. One with all binaries and a small
selfcontained texmf tree (and thus live). The second with everything 
else. Upon the completion of the installation of the first CD, 
a message appears in the dialogue screen (or maybe a melodic voice) 
saying 'Now please insert CD#2' after which the rest of the installation 
is done.
