    Another question concerning texinfo:
    Is it really necessary to have automake-1.6 installed? 

I made the texinfo 4.2 distribution with the latest versions of gettext,
automake, and autoconf at the time.  It may or may not be easily
possible to build it with older versions.  I doubt it, since there are
so many interdependencies between them.

    NO packages for automake-1.6.

It's been out for quite a while.
