Is that the output of xlsfonts -fn "-*-helvetica-medium-r-*-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-*" ? 
My guess is that it's choking on the 12 and 10, respectively.

Thanks for your swift answer. 

That seems the most likely explanation, but I am still baffled as to where the 
10 and 12 come from. It has to be somewhere in the program, because 
I don't use helvetica for anything. 

It really doesn't make sense to specify sizes for a font that resides in font.scale anyway.
