[tex-k] An idea for texinfo

Hi Karl,

I'd like to implement a feature in texinfo that allows to set an info_path
constructed from PATH.

What I have in mind is roughly this:

If the info_path (from $INFOPATH + -d options + possibly the default path)
contains an element "PATH", that is replaced by a list constructed from the
individual elements path in $PATH as follows:

path="", path=".", path="./*" (or Windows equivalents)
=> nothing

path="PREFIX/DIR"
=> the first existing directory among
 	PREFIX/share/info
 	PREFIX/info
and possibly also (inspired by man-db)
 	PREFIX/DIR/share/info
 	PREFIX/DIR/info
avoiding to add duplicates, e.g. from PATH="PREFIX/bin:PREFIX/sbin"

path=<anything else>
=> nothing

What do you think?
