[tex-k] cm-super fails

Hi

I installed a test version of cm-super fonts (uploaded recently to CTAN), 
run LaTeX with a small test file:

   \documentclass[12pt]{article}
   \usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
   \begin{document}
   hello
   \end{document}

and then dvips, as here:

   dvips -o xxx -u cm-super test.dvi

which failed with a mysterious error message:

   This is dvips(k) 5.86e Copyright 2001 Radical Eye Software (www.radicaleye.com)
   ' TeX output 2001.10.31:1829' -> xxx
   <texc.pro><cm-super-t1.enc><texps.pro>. <sfrm1200.pfb> Error: 3250744 Subr not found 


Does anyone have a hint as to what might be causing the problem?
