If you want to integrate a library, I'd say that it isn't worth the
effort.  bzip2 is extraordinary slow, needs a huge amount of
memory and the files are not so much smaller than those compressed
with gzip.  bzip2 is quite nice if people have to use a very slow
telephone line for downloading files.

I'm sure that nobody would miss it.

I agree with you that using external programs has some advantages.
But in this case, there is at least the advantage that everybody uses
the same compression algorithm.  Fabrice then has to put gzip into his
distribution, probably he already does.
