[pdftex] CMYK images in pdftex.

The problem is, going from a photograph to a pdf
document suitable for print, using pdftex, in a Linux
environment.

When I scan an image using e.g., Xsane I get an image
that is essentially RGB. I can save this image in a
variety of formats, including pnm. I can convert that
image to a cmyk-based tiff file using the program
pnmtotiffcmyk.

However pdftex no longer accepts tiff image formats.

Printers insist that color illustrations be
done in cmyk form.

SO: how does one get to a pdftex document with color
photos in cmyk form embedded?
