Make is a programme that works on a Makefile, which describes how a  
source file is converted to another kind, for example an object file,  
a programme, or a PDF file, too, and on what else this target  
depends. A Makefile also can contain descriptions how to install  
files in a file system.

GNU Emacs has an info node on make. There are books and there is a  
lot of documentation on the net, even in German. Somehow make and  
Makefiles are not used much in the world of TeX ...
