     Oh if only all AFM files had CC instructions for all the Cork
     composite glyphs, life would be so much simpler...

Can I interest you in a toolkit that uses awk to create
both C -1 lines for new composites and also CC
lines for the actual recipe?  It even creates
a pseudo-afm file for METAFONT fonts.  

Why would one want to do that?  Because afm is more
compact than the various alternatives and easier to
edit.  Besides, it is the natural raw material for
conversions to vpl.

The CC lines created by the toolkit are really good
for upright fonts, and an adequate base for hacking
in the case of italic or obliqued fonts.  logarithms
are built into awk, bit trigonometry is not.
