TeX abbreviated font names - the real problem
Hi: my previous attempts to mail a message like this appear to have been
stymied by our mailer. So here goes again. I apologize if you get this
more a second time.
Below is an out of data list of AFM files from the Adobe file-server. It is
out of date, since I got it a couple of days ago. Did you really come up
with abbreviated names for all 770 fonts in this list? And what about other
vendors (BitStream has over a thousand fonts)? Are you willing to
continually come up with new abbreviations as fonts are converted to
electronic form? How can two letter abbreviations of font names be used
with vendors that have more than 626 font families in their catalog
(presently none do, but this may happen)? It is not enough to come up with
names for those fonts that are `important' or `often used' - people don't
agree on what is esthetically pleasing or appropriate - otherwise we
wouldn't have this plethora of fonts to choose from in the first place.
Someone has to take on the responsibility of coming up with abbreviations
for TeX use - or at least to act as a clearing house for proposed abbreviations
(much like the Adobe Unique ID coordinator assigns numbers to fonts submitted).
But why create yet another committee, when vendors already had to come up
with abbreviations to use on operating systems that restrict file name length?
How about just adopting these abbreviations. Then there is no argument over
what obscure 2 or 3 letter combination hasn't been used yet - or delay while
some committee mulls the issue.
